Tips for Keeping New Year’s Resolutions for 2013

Monday, January 07, 2013
Did you make a New Year’s resolution this year?

Getting fit, taking a trip, reducing waste, eating healthy, and managing stress are among the most popular resolutions year after year according to USA.gov.  So are volunteering to help others and learning new skills. You may also have strengthening relationships, making new friends, and having more fun on your list.

You are 10 times as likely to attain your goals if you write down your resolutions, according to research cited in a recent Forbes.com article by Maggie Warrell.  If you haven’t already, write them down now. Also write down why your resolutions are important to you. If your resolutions truly matter to you and you can express why, then you will have more motivation to stick to your plan.

When setting your goals be specific. It’s not enough to say you are going to get fit.  You need to plan how you are going to get fit.  What are the small accomplishments on the way to achieving your goal?  Be sure to include rewards in your plan for when you reach significant milestones.  That way you have something tangible to look forward to along the way

Most of all, make sticking to your resolutions fun!!!!!

Here’s some ideas for achieving some of the most popular resolutions:

Get More Fit

Here’s some ideas to make exercise enjoyable:
  • Golf at Sevillano Links.
  • Dance Saturday night in Carlinos.  This month we feature the Blue Merles, All Fired Up, Tom Drinnon and Jack Slack Bands. Check out the Entertainment Calendar on our website to see what live bands are playing every Saturday.
  • Take a stroll around the Casino grounds.
  • Schedule these activities in your calendar and make them part of your plan.
Eat More Healthy

The Rolling Hills Buffet features fresh fruits and vegetables every day, as well as fish and other healthy foods.  The fish prepared by Rolling Hills Chefs is as delicious as it is healthy. According to recent research, people who eat baked or broiled fish at least once a week may improve their brain health and cut the risk of developing memory problems or Alzheimer's disease.

Strengthen Relationships

The best way to strengthen a relationship with someone you love is to spend more time with him or her. Timbers Steakhouse offers the perfect setting for dining and conversation. If you want a little entertainment while you dine, come on Thursday nights and enjoy music for fine dining by Laurie Dana.

Have More Fun and Laugh More Often

It’s easy to keep this resolution at Rolling Hills Casino and Resort. Kick off the laughs the first Friday of every month at the Comedy Club. Play your favorite games in the Casino. Bring the kids to the Arcade. Golf at Sevillano Links. Party in Carlino’s Night Club on Saturday night. Cheer when your favorite team scores a touch down during our Monday Night Tailgate parties.

Make New Friends

You can’t make new friends if you are staying home wishing you had more friends. If you golf, join our Men’s or Ladies’ Club.  If you are a business person, the Corning Rotary Club meets at the Casino every Wednesday at noon.  Join the Saturday night party in Carlinos. If you come to the Casino to gamble, say hi to the person sitting next to you at the table game or slot machine.

Learn Something New

Learn some cooking tips from our chefs at the upcoming Wine, Food and Art Festival or check out our cooking demos on YouTube. Book some golf lessons at Sevillano Links or get some Black Jack tips from our dealers.  Take some swing dance lessons and practice on our dance floor.  Be sure to schedule both practice time and lessons in your calendar.

Give Back to the Community

This is a favorite resolution for everyone at Rolling Hills Casino. We encourage volunteerism and charitable giving.  We support activities that promote health, safety and education in our local communities. The Expect More Tehama initiative is especially important to us.

For more information about our Charitable Giving program, visit our Community Development web page at: http://rollinghillscasino.com/foundation/

I hope this blog post gives you inspiration for sticking to this year’s resolutions.  We wish you a fun and successful 2013.

8 Things to Do on a Rainy Day

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

It’s been raining for days and rain is in the forecast for six of the next ten days. Is the gloomy weather starting to get you down?  Here are eight ideas to brighten up your day.

1. Meet a friend for coffee.
Aromas Coffee Shop is my favorite place for a caramel macchiato.

2. Take a bubble bath.
There’s nothing better than a bubble bath in a Jacuzzi in your room at the Lodge.

Here’s a recipe for a wonderful bath with long lasting fluffy bubbles that will help you retain moisture in your skin : Mix ½ cup mild body soap, 1 tablespoon of honey, and one egg white. Pour the mixture under the water as you draw your bath.

3. Play a new game.
There’s a new Yahtzee game at Rolling Hills.

4. Try a new recipe.
You’ll find a great recipe for our Artichoke Encrusted Halibut on our blog, “Recipes made easy at the Corning, Wine, Food, and Art Festival.”  It’s a favorite at Timber’s Steakhouse.

We’ve also posted some recipes on YouTube.  Here’s one on how to cook a salmon filet in minutes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAjDHvgaVnI.

5. Play a round of golf at Sevillano Links.
It’s no drearier right now than it is on a summer day in Scottland where the game was invented. Start your game after noon for the best rates and warmest temperatures.

6. Go out for breakfast or lunch at Timber’s or the Rolling Hills Buffet.
If you are 50 or over, enjoy a 50% discount on your Buffet meal on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

7. Get a new look.
There’s a hair stylist at the Traveler’s Center at Rolling Hills.

8. Have a party.
Invite your friends and make a day — or night — of it. Rolling Hills has everything you need for a fun time including fun and games, and food and drinks. Plan your party for Saturday night, and treat your guests to free live music and dancing in Carlinos. Best part is you don’t have to clean your house before the party starts.

Thanksgiving at Rolling Hills Casino

Wednesday, November 23, 2011

Hard to believe it’s Thanksgiving already. We have a lot to be thankful for in Tehama County. It’s a great place to live and visit, and this Thanksgiving there is no other place I’d rather be.

Many of our friends and family are celebrating their holiday with us at Rolling Hills Casino, which makes the day special for those of us who work here. I joke that the best part of eating dinner in the Buffet or Timbers is no dishes, but truthfully, the best part is the food. Tender turkey, fluffy mashed potatoes, and stuffing is on the menu as well as a wide assortment of foods grandma never thought about serving. My mouth is watering to try the Apple Bourbon Pork Loin with caramel apple cream in the Buffet.  The chefs have been cooking up a storm and the smells coming from the kitchen are wonderful.

Whether you ate at home or at the Casino, if you are looking for something to do with out of town guests after Thanksgiving Dinner, bring them to the Casino.  While the adults play their favorite games, the kids can play in the Arcade.

It’s supposed to rain Thanksgiving, but the forecast for the rest of the week looks clear enough for game of golf.  I don’t know about you, but I’m going to need a game of golf to burn off that extra piece of pumpkin pie. Did you know that one hour of hitting range balls burns about 250 Calories! The average 18-hole golf game burns 800 calories if you ride in the cart, twice that if you walk.

Dancing is another great way to burn calories. The average person burns 326 calories an hour doing the twist and 300 calories square-dancing. I have never seen anyone square dance at Rolling Hills, but I’m sure the Cottonwood band will play a song or two you can twist and turn to this Saturday night from 9pm to 1am.  This band is a legend in Northern California and they know five decades of dance songs. Admission is free.

It just occurred to me that burning calories can be as fun as eating them. It really is better to play.

A little rain . . . a little sunshine . . . a lot of fun this week

Tuesday, October 04, 2011

I can’t believe its October already!  It’s pouring outside, but by Friday the sun will be shining bringing with it warmer weather in time for Sunday’s Orange Ball event at Sevillano Links and this weekend’s pheasant hunt at Clearcreek Sportsclub. Rain or shine, there’s plenty of entertainment at Rolling Hills Casino this week, including Comedy night with Bruce Baum and Jimmy Shubert on Friday and live music with the band “All Fired Up” on Saturday.

When I think of autumn, I think of comfort foods, pumpkins, and Gingerbread Houses.    The annual Gingerbread House project completed in November/December is a “must see” at Rolling Hills.  Each year, our Food and Beverage team constructs a wonderland extravaganza with a magnificent gingerbread house as the centerpiece.  The gingerbread houses are at least 3 feet tall. One year, the project featured an elaborate castle with moat and bridge, another year it was a beautiful mansion. The theme is different every year. We don’t have a theme yet for this year’s gingerbread house, and we need your help.

Gingerbread House Theme Contest: We need a theme for this year’s Gingerbread House to help our team get started on the design.  Submit your theme idea on our Facebook page or by emailing info@rollinghillscasino.com.  The person with the winning theme idea will receive dinner for two each week in December.  In addition, we will donate $500 to the charity of the winner’s choice.

I don’t know about you, but I get a little hungrier with cooler weather.  I’ve been in the mood for steak and seafood lately, so I’m pretty excited about this month’s featured dinner in Timbers Steakhouse: A mouth-watering four-ounce petite filet mignon with six deep fried or skewered shrimp for only $18. Timbers is open Wednesday through Sunday from 5pm to 10pm.  For reservations, call (530) 528-3506.

After a good dinner, I like to laugh. There will be plenty of laughter at this Friday’s Comedy Night featuring Jimmy Shubert and Bruce Baum. With his large mustache and long hair, Baum looks like David Crosby, but he will swear he is not. He can sing, however, and has several songs on YouTube with his band the Nogginblasts. He co-authored the Letters From a Nut series of books, written under the pseudonym Ted L. Nancy. He even appeared on the Simpsons as an animated version of himself, and is the creater of the comedy web-desitination “ theOuterNet.com. Perhaps you saw one of Bruce’s numerous appearances on Hollywood Squares, Full House, Growing Pains, Comedy Central, HBO and / or Showtime — Or perhaps not. Some of us have better things to do than sit around and watch TV all day: Such as coming to Rolling Hills and seeing Bruce Baum perform live.

Jimmy Shubert also has an impressive resume as an actor and comedian, both in film and on television His hour-long stand-up comedy special was named a top ten comedy DVD  for 2010 by Punchline Magazine, and is available on itunes. You may have seen him in his recurring role on “King of Queens” for five years and several appearances on “Entourage”. He has released three comedy albums, “Animal Instincts” “Pandemonium” & “Alive & kickin.”

The Comedy Club doors open Friday, October 8 at 7:30pm; the show starts at 8:30pm. Reserved table seats are $15; general admission tickets are only $10.  Get your tickets early, as they often sell out for Comedy Club nights. You can get tickets at the Casino coat check, online at www.ticketforce.com, or by phone at (877) 840-0457.

Come back on Saturday and get “All Fired Up” for dancing.  Meet your friends in Carlinos for a night of live classic rock from 9pm to 1am.  Admission is free.

Why should "Out of Towners" have all the fun?

Monday, September 26, 2011

World Tourism Day is this Tuesday.  Too often, we think we have to travel far to be a tourist. Perhaps we should change our thinking and explore all the reasons tourists from all over the world visit our area.  The North State has many wonderful assets: the Sundial Bridge, art galleries and antique stores in Red Bluff, Shasta Lake, the New Clairvaux Winery, the Sacramento Discovery Center, and of course Rolling Hills Casino and Sevillano Links. This week, think like a tourist and start your world tour with a trip to the Rolling Hills Casino and Resort.

If you like to play golf and want to make a day and night of it, Sevillano Links has Play and Stay packages available that include hotel accommodations, all-you can-eat breakfast, a round of golf, cart usage, and range balls. Visit http://www.sevillanolinks.com/stayandplay/ for more information.

If you like to hunt, fish, and sport shoot, the Clear Creek Sports Club offers upland game bird and duck hunting, wild boar hunting, fly fishing, and trap/sporting clays. Contact the Clear Creek Sports Club at (530) 520-9464 for the full range of opportunities.

A tourist has to eat. Rolling Hills Casino has several dining options that make it worth being a tourist. The all-you-can-eat Rolling Hills Buffet features prime rib every day for lunch and dinner as well as a wide assortment of popular dishes.  If you want a dinner cooked to perfection just for you, Timbers Restaurant is open Wednesday through Sunday from 5pm to 10pm.  Tucked away from the gaming floor, Timbers is the ideal place for a romantic getaway or special dinner.  For a quick bite to eat close to the action, Aroma’s Coffeeshop offers pizza, hot dogs, gourmet sandwiches, gelato, and specialty coffee drinks.

Stay overnight at the Rolling Hills Lodge or Inn.  Both beautiful hotels offer comfortable accomdations, and all-you-can eat breakfast.

Or park your “home away from home” in our RV Park with full electrical and water hookups. It’s safe and secure with 24-hour patrol.  Private showers and laundry are available at the Traveler’s Center.  Sevillano Links also offers Golf Play and Stay packages for the RV Park.  To take advantage of the RV Park Stay and Play, check in at Sevillano Links before checking into the RV Park.

No vacation is complete without entertainment.  Rolling Hills Casino is the North State’s premier entertainment destination with over 800 slot machines and the most popular table games including Blackjack, Emperor Pai Gow Poker, Texas Shootout, and Three-Card Poker.

This week’s Entertainment Calendar highlights include Monday Night Football, the $10,000 Piggy Smash finale on Friday, and the James Slack band on Saturday night.  Visit our entertainment calendar for more information about these and other upcoming events. http://rollinghillscasino.com/calendar/

We hope you have a fun journey to Rolling Hills Casino and Resort, your local tourist destination.

It’s better to play (and sometimes to watch): September 20 to 24

Tuesday, September 20, 2011

We have a slogan at Rolling Hills Casino: “It’s better to play.”

Sometimes watching others play is just as fun.  That’s certainly the case with Monday Night Football at Rolling Hills, where you can watch the big game each week on gigantic 14 foot screens, enjoy all-you-can eat appetizers, and have a shot at winning cash and prizes.

It’s also fun to watch someone put on goggles and grab a hammer to smash a piggy bank.  Every 30 minutes from 8pm to 11pm on Fridays in September, our computer randomly selects a table game or slot machine. The person playing with their Shasta Club card in the selected seat gets to choose a piggy bank containing $100 to $1,000.

Watching someone win a big jackpot is exciting.  However, I bet winning the jackpot is significantly more exciting. Just ask Guadalupe, who recently won a $25,000 jackpot playing slots!

Golf is something else that I think is more fun to play than watch.  This Saturday, September 24, there are two opportunities for golfing and camaraderie that benefit our community: Golf for a Cause to benefit Girls Inc. and the Corning Elementary 3rd Annual CEEF Golf Tournament. For more information on these two awesome events visit www.sevillanolinks.com.

It’s cheaper to play golf on Tuesdays and Thursdays if you are over 50.  Only $45. After you work up an appetite on the course, enjoy the buffet at ½ price.  Age does have its privileges on Senior Days.

Saturday Night Live Music is the same price for everyone regardless of whether you’ve earned extra privileges for age.  ADMISSION IS FREE.  This week Kelly McDonald band plays from 9pm to 1am. Work it up on the dance floor and call it play.

This week at Rolling Hills Casino: September 11 - 17: NorCal Open Golf, Return of Monday Night Football, and More

Monday, September 12, 2011

Why watch pro golf on TV when you can watch it this week live at Sevillano Links? And why watch the big NFL game alone on your couch, when it’s larger than life at Rolling Hills Monday night?  Bottom line, you can’t be part of the action if you are sitting in front of your TV set at home.

Read on for details about tournaments at Sevillano Links, plus Monday Night Football, Fiesta Friday, Piggy Smashes, Live Music Saturday Night and a community program that we applaud.

Monday through Wednesday, Sevillano Links hosts the 84th Annual Nor Cal Open, one of the most prestigious golf championships in the Western United States. Past Champions include Archer, Lema, Maltbie, Jacobsen, Sutherland, and Boyns, among others. This tournament is an NCPGA and NCGA Point event. Spectators are welcomed.

Sevillano Links at Rolling Hills Casino is a John Daly Signature, 18-hole championship golf course, and named a "Best New Golf Course" by Golfweek magazine. Click here for more information about our golf course: http://www.sevillanolinks.com.

Women, Mark your calendar: Golf Fore a Cause returns September 24.  Spend the afternoon with the girls, learn to play golf, and help raise money for programs that help girls reach their full potential. This annual fundraiser for Girls Inc. is fun and includes a morning tee party, golf clinic, boutiquing, and tee prize lunch. Most important, you get the priceless feeling of giving to empower girls to be smart strong and bold. For more information, visit www.sevillanolinks.com.

Football Fans: Our Monday night football tailgate parties kick off this week.  Watch the big games on a gigantic 14-foot screen.  Your $10 admission includes all you can eat appetizers and a chance to win great prizes.  Monday nights are humongous fun at Rolling Hills during football season.

It’s another Pig Smash this Friday. All you have to do to enter is play at Rolling Hills Casino with your Shasta Club card. Every 30 minutes from 8pm to 11pm, a random slot machine or table game set will be drawn.  If your seat is chosen, you’ll grab a mallet, choose your pig, and smash away to instantly win cash prizes from $100 to $1,000.  On Friday September 30th, the cash prizes increase with pigs containing $500 to $5,000.

Los Felinos and Los Babys in concert, Friday September 16. We are excited to present two legends in Latin Music.   Tickets on sale now at Coat Check. $20 pre-sale, $25 at the door.

James Buell Band Saturday Night.  Speaking of dancing, it’s another night of country with the James Buell Band, Saturday September 17 from 9pm to 1am.  Admission free.

A Community Program That We ApplaudThe Expect More Tehama Reading Challenge! Read 100 minutes a week and receive a free pumpkin and other harvest goodies! Visit  http://expectmoretehama.com/ for more information.

This week at Rolling Hills Casino: August 28 — September 3

Sunday, August 28, 2011

September arrives this week and with it the $59,600 Piggy Smash Giveaway! Also returning later this month are the pig skin games on the big screen (AKA football.)

There’s a long list of things to go hog wild about this week including the Comedy Club, DJ Rezdog on Saturday night, daily Hot Seat Drawings, Sunday Skins Games at Sevillano Links, and Senior Days.  If that isn’t enough, the Casino presents the First Annual RSNC Ranch Sorting this Saturday and Sunday. So much happening this week, I could do a daily blog!

Our wackiest promotion of the year begins this Friday.  What can be more fun than grabbing a mallet and smashing a piggy bank for cash?  This year, the Casino made it even easier to participate. Every 30 minutes from 8pm to 11pm, we will draw a random slot machine or table game seat.  If your seat is chosen, you’ll grab a mallet, choose your pig, and smash away to instantly win cash prizes from $100 to $1,000.  On Friday September 30th, the cash prizes increase with pigs containing $500 to $5,000.

Friday, September 2nd, Comedy Night returns with Steve Smith and Keith Nelson.  Check out this YouTube clip of Steve Smith:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIXMNutb7i8   Then check out this video of Keith Nelson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SknVLVopTZ0. If these videos are any indication, I expect to be squealing with laughter this Friday night.  Doors open at 7pm. Show starts at 8:30 pm. Tickets are available at www.ticketforce.com, by phone at (877) 840-0457, or at the Coat Check within the Casino

A game fit for a Queen

Saturday, April 09, 2011

Golf is a royal sport.  In fact, Queen Mary of Scotts was an avid golfer in the 1500s, and her influence on the game is evident today.  She coined the term “caddie” by calling her assistants “cadets.”  She probably played at the famous St. Andrews golf course during her reign.  That is the same golf course where the first ladies golf club was established in 1867.

She knew what more and more women are discovering:  Golf is fun, good exercise, and a great way to spend the day with friends and associates.

If she were in Corning this weekend, I bet Queen Mary would not miss the Nine and Wine event for women golfers at Sevillano Links.   The 9-hole scramble tournament begins at 3:30 Sunday April 10, followed by an informal wine and cheese social gathering at the course.

Hosted by the Sevillano Links Ladies Club, the event includes prizes for longest drive, closet-to-the-pin, and low net.  The entry fee is $37 for Ladies Club members and $40 for guests.  The Ladies Club is an affiliate club of the Pacific Women’s Golf Association (PWGA).   For more information or to register for the event, call the golf shop today at (530) 528-4600.

A good game of golf is custom fitted

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

Thinking of getting new golf clubs?  Getting custom fitted for golf clubs is a good idea any time you buy a new set. You can get custom fitted for free on April 2: Demo Day at Sevillano Links Golf Course at Rolling Hills.

Custom fitting golf clubs involves several easy measurements and a quick assessment of your game. Gender, height, arm length, hand size, skill level, age, and swing speed all determine how golf clubs should be designed and fitted.

Gender is used to put you into the correct fitting scale. The golf industry uses different definitions of “standard length” for men and women. Your height and the distance in inches from your wrist to the floor determine the length of golf club that is appropriate for you. A tall person with long arms may require shorter clubs than an average height person with short arms. About 80% of golfers are standard length.

Your age, skill level, estimated golf swing speed, and club you use at the 150 yard marker help determine the shaft flex that is appropriate for you.

Come on out to Sevillano Links on Saturday and get custom fitted. Then test out a few different golf clubs from different manufacturers.  Even if you aren’t ready to buy yet, you’ll know what clubs to put on your wish list.  After all, it’s never too early to shop for Christmas.
